Between Nature and History
Set out to discover one of the most evocative and historically rich routes in the Aosta Valley: the path through the Les Combes forest, known to have been the summer resting place of the Popes. This itinerary offers not only a walk in the heart of unspoiled nature but also an immersion in spiritual tranquility. The Starting Point The hike begins in the small parking lot just before the village of Les Combes, where you can leave your car and set off on foot through the village. Immediately to the left, you will find signs for Trail No. 4, which will guide you into the heart of a centuries-old forest of spruce and larch trees. Through the Protection Forest The well-marked trail proceeds through a quiet and shady environment, ideal for those seeking an escape from the daily hustle and bustle. Following Trail No. 4 and then Trail No. 4B, which connects with the Plan du Saint-Père, you will find yourself immersed in a peaceful atmosphere that has also welcomed pontiffs seeking refuge and meditation. Toward the Spectacular Panorama Having passed a few hairpin bends, leave the main path that veers to the right and continue left. This part of the trail leads up to the rocky outcrop called Croux de Bouque, where you will find a cross and a stone altar. Here a breathtaking scenery opens up before you: a panoramic view of the Mont Blanc massif and the vast Plaine of Aosta. It is a perfect place for a reflective stop or to take memorable photos. Conclusion of the Hike The return follows the same route as the outward, allowing you to savor the quiet of the forest again and reflect on the experience. This route is ideal for all nature and history lovers, as well as those seeking a peaceful moment away from the usual tourist routes.
