Bard The muffler of giants
An evocative Canoe Excursion!
In the archaeological geo-site of Bard, Aosta Valley, it is possible to see the so-called “potholes of the giants,” sometimes also called “devil’s potholes.”
What are the potholes of the giants?
The giants’ potholes are deep depressions that can take different shapes depending on the rock and the type of abrasive action.
They arise, in fact, from the strong erosion operated by river water especially in locations that were previously covered by glaciers.
Indeed, in the archaeological geosite of Bard, signs of a pre-existing glacier that occupied the Dora Baltea valley some 10,000 years ago are visible.
The huge cavities, or potholes of the giants, should therefore have been formed by the numerous debris carried by subglacial streams.
How do you get to the Giants’ potholes?
The Giants’ potholes are easily reached in a few minutes on foot.
From the parking lot generally used to then go to visit the Fortress of Bard, we suggest you start walking and walk through the village.
Then turn right and follow the signs to the geological site.
There, you will find the large depressions in the rock, as well as the “women’s slide” and ancient rock carvings.
