Brissogne Brissogne Castle

the medieval doundjoùn of Brissogne

The History of the Medieval Castle of Brissogne The castle of Brissogne, also called doundjoùn or tornalla in the brèissognentse language, was built on the top of a hill, at a very strategic point.
It was the year 1200 and the castle was built at the behest of the lords of Quart.
In 1378, the lineage of the lords of Quart died out and the castle of Brissogne passed into other hands.
It was the counts of Savoy who took over and in 1405 enfeoffed the manor to Thibaut de Montagny, the husband of Margaret, the only daughter of Henry of Quart, who was himself the last heir of the ancient lineage.
In 1700, the castle of Brissogne was purchased by the noble family of the Avise, which, however, proved to be responsible for the ruin of the architectural complex, which finally collapsed in 1776.
The castle had completely lost its strategic purpose; it no longer served to prevent the advance of enemies.
Since that year, it was never rebuilt.
Brissogne Castle today: the ruins Today, the castle of Brissogne is reduced to ruins.
It is no longer possible to see the architectural structure it once had, because precisely from the year of its collapse, 1776, it was no longer in anyone’s interest to give it its former glory.
All that currently remains is only a cylindrical tower, corresponding to the central keep of the ancient building.
In addition, a few remnants of the surrounding walls can be observed.
