Champorcher The History

Champorcher owes its name to a legendary St. Porcier, a soldier of the Theban Legion who, according to religious sources, went to this valley to preach the Gospel.
Here Champorcher would then mean Campo di Porciero (Porcier in French).
The toponym during Fascism, from 1939 to 1945 , was Italianized into Campo Laris.
This beautiful mountain valley was populated in ancient times by the Salassi and in the late Middle Ages was given as a feud by the Savoy to the Counts of Bard until Amadeus IV of Savoy took it back in 1242.
Of the Lords of Bard remains well preserved the crenellated Tower of Champorcher Castle dating from the early 13th century.
Near the Tower we find the Church of St. Nicholas, whose origins date back to the 14th century, as it is thought to have been the castle chapel of the Lords of Bard.
In the early 1700s it was rebuilt and then over the years various craftsmen embellished it with Baroque-style altars and at the center of the altar a painting of St. Nicholas, patron saint of the Champorcher community.

Whato do in Champorcher

What to do in Champorcher

For hiking enthusiasts, the Champorcher Valley offers numerous itineraries for walking, mountain biking and horseback riding, during which it is possible to admire the typical fauna and flora of the Aosta Valley.
Champorcher Valley offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in easy walks of a couple of hours at the end of which one can stop for a restorative lunch either at the Dondena Refuge or the Miserin Refuge.
On August 5 each year it is possible to participate in the procession of the Madonna delle Nevi.
Starting from the parish church, one reaches the Shrine of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, which stands on the shores of Lake Miserin at an altitude of 2,583 meters.
After about a 4-hour walk, the shrine is reached and together with the communities from Cogne, Val Soana and Fenis that have arrived in turn, prayers are said to ask for Our Lady’s protection during the long winter.
On the first Saturday in August, the ovens present in all the hamlets of the municipality of Champorcher are lit to bake the sought-after rye bread enriched with chestnuts, walnuts, figs and raisins.
An opportunity not to be missed to taste authentic flavors that are almost lost today.
Very interesting for fans of handicrafts is a visit to the Hemp Ecomuseum, where one can witness the processing of hemp according to ancient traditions.
The ecomuseum is located in the hamlet of Chardonney in the Thomas House, a very well-preserved typical Aosta Valley rural house.
