Courmayeur The History
Courmayeur has ancient roots dating back to Roman times, when it was a stop along the Via delle Gallie, a road connecting the Aosta Valley with Gaul.
The name "Courmayeur" may come from "Curia Major," meaning "major court" in Latin.
In the Middle Ages, the Courmayeur area was disputed between several feudal lords, including the lords of Savoy and the Duchy of Aosta.
These territorial conflicts characterized much of the history of the Aosta Valley.
It was in the mid-19th century that Courmayeur began to develop as a tourist resort.
The discovery of the therapeutic properties of the local hot springs attracted visitors seeking cures.
Subsequently, the arrival of winter tourism and mountaineers seeking challenges in the surrounding mountains helped solidify its reputation as a mountain tourist destination.
Courmayeur, in fact, being located at the foot of Mont Blanc attracted climbers from all over the world causing mountaineering to become particularly popular in the area.
Even the first documented ascent of Mont Blanc took place in 1786!
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Courmayeur continued to grow as a summer and winter tourist destination.
The opening of the Mont Blanc Tunnel in 1965, connecting Courmayeur with Chamonix in France across the Alps, made the town more accessible and encouraged international tourism.
Today, Courmayeur is a world-renowned mountain resort with a vibrant cultural life, restaurants, stores, and a wide range of outdoor activities, such as skiing, mountaineering, hiking, and trekking.
It is also known for its traditional Aosta Valley cuisine.
