Introd

Unité des Communes Grand-Paradis Introd

the land of the popes

Introd, located at 880 meters above sea level, owes its name “interaquas” or “entre eaux” in French, to its location between the Dora di Rhêmes and the Savara stream.
The village lies at the mouth of the Rhêmes and Valsavarenche Valleys, which are part of the Gran Paradiso National Park.
It is primarily an agricultural place and was an ancient fief of the Sarriod barons.
Introd became famous for hosting the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, who spent his summer vacations in the quiet hamlet of Les Combes, a tradition continued for some years by his successor Benedict XVI.

Introd The History

Introd, like many other towns in Valle d'Aosta, is a municipality whose roots originate in the Middle Ages even though its territory was populated from remote antiquity.
From the earliest times, in fact, Introd was frequented and crossed by Italic peoples of Ligurian stock who, later merging with certain invaders, gave rise to the Salassi, and, of course, it was crossed is also controlled by the Romans.
With the fall of the Roman Empire Introd suffered invasions by the Goths, Lombards and Franks to whose kingdom it was admitted in 575 AD.
In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Savoy family headed by Umberto I who dominated the entire region.
In 1242 the present fief of Introd was ceded by the Savoy to the noble family of Bard, especially to Mark of Bard.
He changed his name to Sarriod d'Introd, and his descendants remained in possession of the fief until 1648, when they ceded it to the Roncas.
Introd has many testimonies especially from medieval times that can be observed with great interest even today.
These include the castle, built by Pierre Sarriod in 1260, the parish church, and the magnificent farmstead l'Ola built between the 14th and 15th centuries.
But why INTROD?
The name is derived from the Latin preposition INTRA, meaning 'between,' with obvious reference to the geographical position of the commune, which is not wedged between two valleys.
