Verrayes The History
The village of Verrayes has much to tell from a historical point of view, starting with the settlements of the Salassi : A population born from the fusion of Italic peoples of Ligurian stock and Celtic invaders, who for more than a century (143-25 B.C.) opposed by putting up resistance to the Roman conquest.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Verrayes was invaded and occupied by Burgundians, Ostrogoths, and Lombards , before being annexed to the Franco-Merovingian kingdom (575).
Later, it was included in the Comitatus of the Aosta Valley (10th century), as part of the second kingdom of Burgundy (8791032).
In the late medieval period ( like Torgnon) it belonged to the lords of Cly, a collateral branch of the Challant family, at the same time following the historical events of the Savoy family, which, starting in the 11th century, had gradually extended its supremacy to the entire region.
About the place name, its origins are uncertain : according to some, it derives from the Latin adjective '' vetus, veteris '' , meaning old.
While in the book ''Quelques notes sur la commune et la paroisse de Verraye,'' by Pierre-Louis Vescoz, the name seems to derive from ''Verus aer,'' meaning good air and climate.
Another hypothesis supposes that it may derive from the Latin "vervactum" meaning land set aside.
The most solid hypothesis is vers - ayes, meaning "toward the waters" in Old French.
In Fascist times, the municipality was integrated with that of Chambave.
