Ollomont Parish Church of St. Augustine
Parish Church of St. Augustine a cradle of history among nature
A Journey Into The History and Art of A Small Alpine Jewel In the heart of the Alps, set in a landscape of incomparable beauty, lies Ollomont, a small municipality that jealously guards the traces of a rich and fascinating history.
Ollomont, with its past linked to the parish of Valpelline until the 17th century, tells a story of community, faith, and mining discoveries that have deeply marked its development and cultural heritage.
A Treasure of Art and Faith The church of St. Augustine, with its single-nave structure originally, represents a true treasure of sacred art and architecture.
The expansion that took place in 1869, which saw the addition of two side aisles, and the erection of the bell tower in 1780, helped define the current appearance of this place of worship, making it a distinctive feature of the Ollomont landscape. The majestic parish church of St. Augustine overlooks a central square.
Originally with only one nave, two side aisles were added in 1868, in Baroque style and unusually high for a mountain church.
Parish Church of St. Augustine The History
Deep Roots: From St. Margaret's Chapel to St. Augustine's Parish The real milestone in Ollomont's religious history, however, was the erection of the parish dedicated to St. Augustine in 1775, marking a moment of significant autonomy and identity for the community.
The construction of the new parish church, completed in the same year, was a major event, symbolizing a growing community in search of its own spiritual space.
