Bard Bard Fortress

A treasure to be discovered

In the Lower Aosta Valley, in the commune of Bard, on top of a fortress, the Fortress of Bard rises in a dominant position.
It is one of the best examples of an early 19th-century barrage fortress.
The Savoy fortress of the Fortress of Bard is located along the ancient Via Francigena, which in the Middle Ages connected Canterbury, England, to Rome.
The Fortress of Bard today: a cultural hub Today, the Fortress of Bard is no longer a defensive fortress, but has been wisely renovated to offer tourists and visitors the opportunity to visit its ancient prisons, as well as the temporary exhibitions housed within the fortress.
In fact, the Fortress of Bard has become a cultural hub of great interest, with permanent museums, such as the “Museum of the Alps,” and experiences and itineraries such as “The Alps of the Youngsters,” designed to introduce young children to mountaineering.
In addition, at several times of the year, temporary exhibitions of all kinds and especially high-level ones, such as the famous “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” exhibition, are set up.
In addition to the museum part, the Fort is also very suitable for organizing events and concerts, which attract thousands of people every year.
How to get to the Fortress of Bard The Fortress of Bard is located in the Lower Aosta Valley and can be easily reached: by car, about 48 kilometers from Aosta, driving along the SS. 26 of the Valley and the A5 highway, exiting at the Pont-Saint-Martin toll booths to the south and Verrès to the north; by train, taking the regional train and getting off at the Hône-Bard station, located 600 meters from the Fortress of Bard.

Bard Fortress The History

When and why the Fortress of Bard was built The Fortress of Bard was built around the year 1000, on top of the foundations of previously existing constructions built by the Romans.
The present construction, however, dates from 830-1838 and is a replacement for an older fortification destroyed by Napoleonic troops in 1800.
Situated at a strategic point at the entrance to the Aosta Valley and consisting of several independent buildings and massive defensive walls, the fort was ideal for halting access to the plain by invaders from beyond the Alps.
