Upper Verra Blue Lake late October PH Nicolo Bagnasco

Ayas Blue Lake Verra

Incredibly turquoise

The walk to the Blue Lake Verra, which lies within a basin on the glacial moraine at the foot of the Verra Rock.
But the walk along the Ru Courtod, a simple and comfortable flat trail that really gets everyone along, is not to be disdained either.
The municipality of Ayas, with its endless kilometers of slopes that make up the Monterosa Ski area, is also an excellent destination for winter sports, of which one is truly spoiled for choice.

Blue Lake is a spectacular destination, suitable for family trekking and high-altitude picnicking.
The trail runs all the way through
Ayas Valley And leads up to 2,200 m.a.s.l.

This is a popular trail for nature and mountain walking enthusiasts and is also suitable for the less experienced because it has no particular difficulties.

How to get to Blue Lake from Saint Jacques

The blue lake can be reached via a path from Saint Jacques, a village located at an altitude of 1,689 meters in the Ayas Valley.

The ascent to Blue Lake is not particularly difficult: it takes about an hour and a half, following the easy path number 7 that climbs up the mountain for a total elevation gain of 550 meters.

The start of the route is on a paved road, which leads from the small church in the central square of Saint Jacques to yellow markers indicating trail number 7 to follow.

Cross the Evancon stream and take the mule track until you reach the edge of the forest.
At the hamlet of Fiery take the turnoff to Blue Lake and continue following the same signs.

The Pian di Verra before the Blue Lake

After about an hour of uphill walking (nothing overly challenging) here is a large flowery plain opening up before you: you have arrived at the lower Pian di Verra (2,0.50 m.a.s.l.).

With the majestic peaks of the Black Rock, Castor and Pollux in the Massif of the Monte Rosa as background, crosses the plane keeping left to a small bridge.

At this point you face a final climb beside the refreshing Evançon River and in plus or minus half an hour you will have arrived at your destination and all your efforts will be rewarded by a splendid view of the blue lake.

Why is the Blue Lake called that?

The Blue Lake is a precious body of water set among the mountains of the Monte Rosa Massif and is known for its intense turquoise color.

This very fascinating hue of it is due to the presence of special rocks and especially glacial silt resulting from the disintegration of serpentine rocks lying on the bottom.

The water in the lake is super clear, clean and pristine–hopefully it will stay that way for a long time to come!
It is so transparent and crystal clear that visitors can catch a glimpse of the bottom.
