Shrine of Our Lady Help of Christians in Rochefort The Chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians, commonly known as the Shrine of Rochefort, stands majestically on the hilltop overlooking the village of Leverogne, in the striking ruins of the ancient castle of Rochefort.
This castle, first mentioned in 1191, was the possession of the noble d’Avise family for centuries.
History and Construction of the Shrine In 1881, the villagers of Rochefort, the only one in the area without a place of worship, decided to erect a chapel.
Supported by Pastor Grappein and Abbot Ambroise Roux, they commissioned architect Giuseppe Lancia to design the sacred building.
Two years later, in 1883, the shrine was completed and blessed by the Bishop of Aosta, Monsignor Duc.
Architectural Features The chapel has a hexagonal plan, with a projecting presbytery and a curved apse.
The side facades feature circular openings, while the main facade is embellished with angular pilasters, a cornice, and a tympanum, crowned by a bell gable.
These architectural elements give the sanctuary an elegant and solemn appearance.
Oratories and Illumination In 1900, five small oratories dedicated to the sorrowful mysteries were built along the access path to the sanctuary.
These oratories add an additional level of spiritual and historical depth to the path leading to the shrine.
In 1906, a small light bulb was installed on the façade of the chapel, and recently the shrine was equipped with night lighting, which enhances its beauty even in the evening hours.
