Villeneuve Châtel Argent

presence is attested as early as 1176 as Castrum Argenteum. However, recent studies indicate that the castle’s current appearance dates from 1275, under the guidance of Master James of Saint Georges, a noted architect in the service of Count Peter II of Savoy. History and Architecture
The choice of site is not accidental: the promontory on which the castle stands was already inhabited in protohistoric times and during the Roman period, taking advantage of its strategic location. This location ensured that the castle remained constantly under the control of the Count of Savoy, serving as a crucial point of defense for the region. The architectural complex of Châtel-Argent Castle includes a vast fortified enclosure with an outer lookout tower. The oldest part is the chapel, dating from the 11th-12th centuries, located on the east side of the castle. The fortifications are complemented by a defensive wall to the west, bordering the second enclosure. Within this area were the dwelling house, now destroyed, a vaulted cistern, and the circular keep.
