Aosta Croix de Ville Street

The Croix de Ville street is one of the oldest and most striking streets in the city of Aosta.
It follows the route of the ancient Roman road that connected Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, the colony founded by Augustus in 25 BC, with the Great St. Bernard Pass .

Croix de Ville Street The History

The street owes its name to the presence of a stone cross, erected in the 15th century in memory of a plague.
The cross is located at the intersection with Sant'Anselmo Street, the ancient decumanus maximus of the Roman city. Several historic buildings can be admired along the street, such as the Roncas Palace, home of the Regional Archaeological Museum, the Passerin d'Entrèves Palace, home of the Regional Library, and the Challant Palace, home of the Court. The Croix de Ville street ends at the Arch of Augustus, the city's symbolic monument, erected to celebrate the victory of the Romans over the Salassi, the Celtic population that inhabited the Aosta Valley before the conquest.
