Gran Paradiso Historical Background The history of Gran Paradiso National Park is linked to the protection of the ibex.
In 1856, in fact, King Victor Emmanuel II declared these mountains a royal hunting reserve, thus saving the ibex from extinction.
The king later created a corps of specialized guards and had a road network built for wildlife protection and hiking.
In 1920, Victor Emmanuel III donated the reserve to the Italian state, and in 1922 it was officially established.
