Valtournenche lake cignana
The beauty of nature
Lake Cignana, also known as Lac de Tsignanaz, represents one of the most impressive naturalistic gems in Valtournenche.
This vast alpine lake features two dams controlling its water level, built between 1925 and 1928, which create a fascinating and functional landscape in the region.
The Cignana Dams The main dam, located on the southern side of the lake, is an imposing concrete structure that rises 58.30 meters and spans 401.78 meters.
The second dam, built of dry-stone on the eastern side, is 24 meters high and 106.65 meters long.
These dams not only regulate water flow but also contribute to a unique ecosystem, promoting biodiversity and offering breathtaking scenery.
Barmasse Refuge A short distance from the lake, on the left side of the main dam, is the Barmasse Refuge, accessible by phone 0166.646309 or 345.1081551.
This refuge is a key stop on Alta Via No. 1 and offers hospitality to the many hikers and mountaineers who decide to explore this fascinating area each year.
Madonna delle Nevi Church On the north side of the lake is the Madonna delle Nevi Church, positioned in an idyllic spot with a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains.
This place of worship is not only an important spiritual point of interest but also a perfect stopping point to reflect on the natural beauty of the region.
Activities and Access Cignana Lake offers numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and landscape photography.
Nature lovers can follow the trail around the lake to view the local flora and fauna, while the more adventurous can explore the trails leading to the surrounding high peaks.
