Arnad Lower Castle

The frescoes found inside the Chateau Vallaise in Arnad present a great stylistic variety that has not yet been sufficiently analyzed.

Despite this, it can be seen with certainty that some pictorial decorations reflect the taste of the provincial nobility of the Savoy Duchy in the 12th century, and that other paintings date instead from interventions carried out by Baron Félix-Charles-François de Vallaise.

Definitely striking and of considerable artistic interest are the frescoes in the main hall of the Lower Castle of Arnad, the Hall of Honor.

This room displays frescoes depicting ten views of the fiefdoms that once belonged to the Vallaise family.

We also highlight the gallery on the second floor, where you can admire the majestic pictorial cycle dedicated to the female epic, with the noble depiction of female heroines from different eras.

The Lower Castle, also called Chateau Vallaise, is a rare example of a Baroque mansion in the Aosta Valley, located in the municipality of Arnad.Arnad has two castles: a Upper Castle and an Inferior one.The Lower Castle is currently undergoing restoration in order to make it accessible to the public. The Vallaise Palace is therefore not yet open to visitors, but remains accessible during events with special openings. Therefore, the castle, which today takes on a distinctly Baroque appearance, actually has medieval origins and has undergone several structural and decorative changes over time.

The castle is organized on three floors, and the structure is flanked by two square towers built for decorative purposes.

The Vallaise building was connected from the very beginning to the previous “Lower Coast Castle” through a covered gallery.
Today, this other manor no longer exists and we can only see its ruins.

Le Chateau Vallaise of Arnad features a courtyard with a double loggia with stone columns; while, a hexagonal chapel dedicated to Saints Joseph and Anthony and the Virgin Mary appears in the large terraced park around the palace.
