Ayas Maison Fournier
The home of an ancient Castellan
Maison Fournier In the historic center of Antagnod, capital of the scattered municipality of Ayas, is one of the most charming and best-preserved rustic house-forts in the entire Aosta Valley.
This house-fort belonged to the noble Counts of Challand: in fact, it appears that around the mid-1400s, Maison Fournier was inhabited by the Challant castellan.
This ancient building still retains on the façade that juts out onto the street a wooden balcony supported by saucers, which stands next to a cylindrical stair tower.
If you notice it well, a paw is attached to the balcony, and it is said to be that of the very last bear shot in the Aosta Valley in 1900.
Nowadays, Maison Fournier is home to the Valdostan Institute of Typical Handicrafts, which means that if you decide to visit this house-fortress, you will also be able to admire a wonderful exhibition of the region’s typical handicrafts.
