Fénis MAV – Museum of Traditional Valdostan Craftsmanship
It is an exhibition space dedicated to handicrafts
The MAV, Museo dell’Artigianato Valdostano di Tradizione, is a true cultural treasure of the Aosta Valley, dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of traditional crafts.
Wealth of Valdostan Craftsmanship
Traditional Valdostan crafts represent a heritage of symbols, knowledge, identity values and extraordinary creative processes.
Every object made carries with it a unique story and meaning, making tangible the cultural roots of the region.
Exposure of the MAV
Inaugurated in Fénis in 2009 and renovated in 2022, the MAV houses more than a thousand pieces including everyday artifacts (17th-20th centuries) and sculptures (13th-20th centuries) from public and private collections.
Museum Sections
- Brocherel Collection: The first section of the museum displays the entire Brocherel Collection, where each object tells a story, serving as a memory keeper.
- Matter and Territory: The second room explores the deep connection between the Aosta Valley territory and craftsmanship, highlighting how artisans shape matter.
- Form and Gesture: The itinerary continues with the section on form, which illustrates the interaction between the craftsman and the material, and gesture, which highlights manual skill and craftsmanship, an invaluable intangible heritage.
- Avant-Garde and Beauty: The exhibit concludes with a section on innovation, showing how craftsmanship can go beyond its time, and beauty, seen as an aesthetic judgment that can be individual, objective or social.
