Valgrisenche Parish Church of San Grato
Worship and Nature
The church was built between 1871 and 1875 and consecrated on June 9, 1876 by Monsignor Duc, Bishop of Aosta, to replace the old church, erected when the parish was established (1392).
Its structure What we can notice at first glance is the contrast between the stone of the bell tower and the plastered walls of the church.
Speaking of the bell tower, since 1392, when the parish was founded, it has been a landmark for the valley.
Its solid appearance, massive exposed stone shaft and octagonal pyramid spire are one with the alpine panorama, so much so that it is now an element of Valgrisenche’s natural landscape.
It was restored in 2017, and to this day the bell tower is still a glaring symbol of the religiosity of mountain people. The Parish Museum Since the mid-1980s, the Valgrisenche Parish Church has been home to a small museum containing centuries of history, with exhibits dating from the 13th to the 18th century.
The exhibit traces the history of Valgrisenche, from objects attributed to the early days of the parish (the museum preserves a processional cross that can be dated to the 13th century and thus predates the establishment of the parish), to statues and vestments from chapels decommissioned due to the construction of the dam.
Most of the material heritage is enclosed here, testifying to the important role of religion over the centuries for Alpine communities.
