Aosta Regional Archaeological Museum
The cradle of history
Archaeological Museum of Aosta The Archaeological Museum of Aosta is located in the historic center of the city, at Piazza Roncas, No. 12, in the building that was once home to the Convent of the Visitandine.
This convent was founded in 1633 by Marquis Pierre-Philibert Roncas and his wife Emérentienne de Vaudan.
The building stands on the site where the Porta Principalis Sinistra was located in Roman times.
The remains of this ancient gate can still be seen in the museum’s basement, accessible via walkways.
The Archaeological Museum’s main collection The museum houses a rich collection of archaeological finds from all over the Aosta Valley, divided into four chronological sections: prehistoric, Roman, Christian-medieval, and Augusta Praetoria plastic.
Among the most interesting objects are: The 8th-century ambo: a part of a carved and painted wooden pulpit found in the excavations of Aosta Cathedral.
The knight’s sword with spurs: dated between the 12th and 13th centuries, from the church of Sant’Orso.
The model of Augusta Praetoria: a 1:250 scale reconstruction of the Roman city founded by Augustus in 25 BC, created between 1938 and 1940 by Aosta sculptor Oreste Châtelain.
