Aosta Roman theater of Aosta

Roman theater of Aosta

The Roman Theater of Aosta is one of the oldest and most impressive monuments in the Aosta Valley.
It was built in the first century AD, shortly after the founding of the Roman city of Augusta Praetoria, and could seat up to 4,000 spectators.
Its façade, 22 meters high, is still well preserved and shows four orders of openings: below the entrance arches, and above three rows of differently shaped windows.
The theater was probably covered by a wooden structure, making it suitable for theatrical and musical performances.
The orchestra had a radius of 10 meters, and the stage wall was decorated with Corinthian columns, statues, and marble.
The theater was abandoned after the fall of the Roman Empire, and in the Middle Ages it was used as a stone quarry and as support for other constructions.
Only in the 19th century was it rediscovered and restored, thanks to the intervention of King Charles Albert and historian Jean-Antoine Gal.
Today the Roman theater in Aosta can be visited and hosts cultural events during the summer.

An ancient jewel in the heart of the city

Let us go beyond the history of our Theater: it is not only an ancient monument, but also a place full of charm and mystery.   Over the centuries, it has hosted performances of all kinds, from tragedies and comedies to concerts and gladiatorial games.
Its stones tell stories of passion, entertainment and adrenaline, transporting us back in time to a time of great splendor.   Even today, the theater retains exceptional acoustics, allowing performances and concerts to be fully enjoyed.
Its tiered structure and elliptical shape promote sound diffusion, creating a unique and evocative atmosphere.   We can say the Aosta Theater is a true open-air museum, where it is possible to admire the remains of the cavea, stage and orchestra.
Among the ruins, you can also see signs of various modifications made over the centuries, which testify to the monument’s long history.   Today, this important theater comes back to life thanks to a series of cultural events held throughout the summer.
Between concerts, plays and film festivals, the theater hosts internationally renowned artists, offering audiences a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in history and culture in an evocative atmosphere.   To visit the Roman Theater of Aosta is to embark on a journey through time, discovering an ancient civilization and its culture.
It is an enriching experience that provides unforgettable emotions.
