Saint-Christophe Route Becca di Viou
A Breathtaking Landscape
The Becca di Viou, a mountain overlooking the city of Aosta, offers a breathtaking view of all the most famous peaks in the Valley: Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, the Gran Combin, the Grivola, the Ruitor, and Mount Emilius.
To climb to the summit, one has to face an elevation gain of 1385 meters, starting from the small village of Blavy, in the municipality of Roisan.
It is a very quaint village, with its stone and wooden houses and its chapel dedicated to St. Roch.
Here there is also a convenient parking lot where you can leave your car and start the hike.
Nature on the Becca di Viou The trail starts from the asphalt road through the village and enters the woods following the signs for the Alpe di Viou.
It is a well-marked mule track that climbs with a few hairpin bends and then continues diagonally through the fir trees.
Along the way there are some fountains where you can refresh yourself and also a farm road that you can follow as an alternative to the trail.
After about an hour and a half of walking, you arrive at Alpe di Viou, a beautiful alpine pasture where you can see cows grazing.
The Penne Nere bivouac and the final part of the ascent on the Becca di Viou From the Alpe di Viou you continue to the Tsa de Viou, another alpine pasture higher up where you will find the Penne Nere bivouac, dedicated to the partisans who fell during the Resistance.
The bivouac is open to all and is equipped with mattresses, blankets, a wood stove and pots and pans.
It is an excellent support point for those who want to break the hike into two days or for those who want to take a nap before tackling the final part of the climb.
From here on, the trail becomes steeper and rockier and winds along the ridge leading to the summit.
You pass the Col de Viou, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the central valley and surrounding mountains.
Then you climb further until you reach the wrought-iron cross that marks the summit of Becca di Viou, at 2856 meters above sea level.
Here you can finally enjoy the well-deserved 360-degree panorama and take some souvenir photos.
