Introd The castle of Introd

Ancient Wonder

Introd Castle stands on a promontory protected by the gorges of the Savara stream and the Dora di Rhêmes (the name “Introd” comes from “entre-eaux,” meaning “between the waters”).
The construction of Introd Castle Its construction probably dates back to the 12th century and initially probably consisted of a square keep surrounded by walls.
In 1260, Pierre Sarriod of Introd transformed the primitive castle, assuming the almost rounded polygonal shape that still characterizes it today and distinguishes it from other Valdostan castles.
These transformations marked the apogee of the Sarriod family, which had united the lordships of Introd and La Tour (Saint-Pierre).
The structure suffered two ruinous fires in the second half of the 19th century and was subsequently restored in the early 20th century by Knight Gonella, with the support of the architect Chevalley.
Currently, the castle belongs to the Counts Caracciolo di Brienza and is granted on loan to the Municipality of Introd, with management entrusted to Fondation Grand Paradis, which guarantees its enjoyment.
The ground floor and park of the castle are open to the public.
H2: What to see near Introd Castle:   La Cascina L’Ola: The building next to the castle, now called “Cascina L’Ola,” served in the past as a stable and haystack for the Lords of Introd.
Part of the old building is supported by five large columns and covered by a projecting roof.
On the west side, there is a door lintel decorated with a keeled arch motif.
