Aosta The Towers of Aosta

The Towers of Aosta are one of the symbols of the city, evidence of its ancient Roman origin and its transformations over the centuries.
In this article we tell you about the history and characteristics of some of the most famous and striking towers, which you can admire during a visit to the city. Balivi Tower The Balivi Tower is located at the northeast corner of the Roman city walls and is one of the most imposing and majestic.
It was built in the 12th century by a local noble family, the De Palais, who adapted it as a feudal residence.
In the 15th century it became the seat of the bailiff, the representative of the Duke of Savoy, and housed the court and prisons.
Today the tower has been restored and houses the “Conservatoire de la Vallée d’Aosta” music school. Tour Fromage La Tour Fromage is located on the east side of the city walls, near the Roman Theater.
It owes its name to the Du Fromage or Casei family, who owned it in the Middle Ages.
The tower has a square plan and three floors, but was modified several times over the centuries.  Tour du Pailleron The Tour du Pailleron is one of the towers that have best preserved their Roman architectural features.
It is located on the south side of the city wall and is about 12 meters high.
It was restored in 1894 by Alfredo D’Andrade, who restored its original appearance.
The tower can only be visited during special events. Other towers In addition to the towers already mentioned, there are other towers worth visiting, such as the Leper’s Tower, the Tour Neuve, the Tower of the Lords de Porta Sancti Ursi, and the Tower of Bramafam.
These towers testify to the historical and cultural richness of Aosta, a city that has been able to integrate its Roman heritage with medieval and modern influences.
