An enchanting medieval legacy

Ussel Castle is one of the most fascinating and best preserved castles in the Aosta Valley.
It is located in Châtillon, in a strategic position overlooking the Dora Baltea plain and the entrance to Valtournenche.

Three square towers rise on the north side, the central one taller than the other two.
The castle is surrounded by a moat dug into the rock.
Inside the castle you can admire the original rooms from medieval times, such as the throne room, chapel, bedrooms, kitchens and dungeons.
Among the most distinctive features are the monumental stone fireplaces, the blind arches decorating the walls and the cross vaults supporting the ceilings.

Ussel Castle The History

The castle of Ussel was built between 1341 and 1345 by Ebalo II of Challant, one of the grandsons of Ebalo Magno, the most powerful feudal lord of the Aosta Valley.
Hebalo II obtained the right to build the castle after a long hereditary dispute with his uncles and cousins, which ended with the division of the family property.
The place remained the property of the Challants until 1470, when Francis, the last lord of Ussel, died.
From then on it underwent a gradual decline, being used as a prison, barracks and depot.
In 1846, with the extinction of the Challants, the castle passed to the Passerin d'Entrèves family, who donated it to the region in 1983.
Between 1988 and 1999 the castle underwent a thorough restoration financed by Baron Bich, an industrialist originally from Châtillon and famous for his Bic pens.
Today the castle is the site of temporary exhibitions devoted to Valle d'Aosta culture and art.
