Donnas Vine and Wine Museum
A leap into viticultural traditions
If you are passionate about wine and history, you cannot miss a visit to the Vine and Wine Museum in Donnas, Aosta Valley.
This is a small museum that tells the story of the winemaking tradition of this area, which is characterized by a favorable climate and steeply sloping terrain, which required enormous terracing work and “heroic” vine cultivation.
The museum is housed in the cellars of the “Anna Caterina Selve” kindergarten, an elegant building built by Commendatore Federico Selve in honor of his mother and for the benefit of the population.
The cellars have a striking vaulted brick ceiling and housed from 1971 to 1976 the headquarters of the Caves Coopératives de Donnas, producers of Aosta Valley’s first Controlled Designation of Origin wine.
In the museum you can admire tools and objects related to grape harvesting and processing, many of which are still in use in Donnas.
You will also discover the names in patois, the local dialect, of these tools, which evoke a past when viticulture was a widespread activity rooted in the local culture.
Along the tour route, you will also find several touch screens illustrating processing techniques and fine local wines.
