Where traditions warm the Coumba
Allein is a small mountain municipality of 209 inhabitants located in the Great St. Bernard Valley, a side valley of the Aosta Valley named after the pass of the same name.
The Great St. Bernard Valley where Allein stands today was once a very important access to the capital of Aosta for those coming from Switzerland.
The municipality of Allein is just 15 km from Aosta and stands in a panoramic position at an altitude of 1,190 m above sea level.
Allein The History
According to some historians, the origin of the name comes from the traditional etymology, "ad lignum," which was already widespread in the Roman period and refers to the location of the village.
In the past, in fact, Allein stood on the edge of a large forested area.
In 1939, at the time of fascism, the place name was Italianized into Alleno, until 1946, when the name changed to Allain.
The spelling we currently use in reference to this village was not fixed until 1976.

What to do in Allein
Among the places not to be missed in Allein is definitely the Meison de Carnaval de la Coumba Freida.
Allein lends itself very much to different types of excursions, suitable for both the youngest and the most experienced.
We recommend starting from the main town, where you will find a descriptive board with the main routes.
From here it is possible to reach the summit of Mont-Saron, through a route immersed in beautiful coniferous and larch forests.
In addition, there is no shortage of a dense network of trails linking all the hamlets to each other and various farm roads connecting the municipality itself to the neighboring villages of Coumba Freida: Gignod, Doues and Etroubles.
