Aosta Aosta
Where Roman charm meets Alpine enchantment.
On the plain crossed by the Dora Baltea River in the heart of the Aosta Valley in northwest Italy lies Aosta, the capital of Italy’s smallest and least densely populated region.
With a population of just over 33,000, Aosta stands at 583 meters above sea level in a valley floor surrounded by magnificent mountains such as Becca di Nona, Mount Emilius, Pointe de Chaligne and Becca di Viou.
Aosta also has a very close connection with the famous Via Francigena, one of the most important pilgrimage routes, as well as a communication route between northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
The route starts in Canterbury, England, and, in Italy, the route begins at the Great St. Bernard Pass and, roughly tracing the ancient Roman Road of Gaul, reaches St. Peter’s Square in Rome.
Aosta The History
Considered the "Rome of the Alps," Aosta has a past behind it that is indeed closely linked to that of Rome, starting especially with its original name: Augusta Praetoria.
This was the name of the colony founded by the Romans following the defeat of the local Salassi people.
The establishment of the settlement of Augusta Praetoria in the territory of Valle d'Aosta was a pretext to control the population of the Gauls more closely and also to consolidate dominance in northern Italy.
But the history of Aosta should begin much earlier.
There are in fact some signs that this land was inhabited as early as the third millennium BC. Traces of the peoples predating the Salassi who lived in the area where Aosta stands today can be visited at theMegalithic Area of Saint-Martin-de-Corléans..
Even today in Aosta it is still possible to admire the historical beauties of the highest cultural interest that this city hosts.
A quiet walk through the streets of Aosta can be transformed into a tour to discover the majestic Roman monuments that have been exceptionally well preserved from antiquity to the present day.

A quiet bicycle path away from automobile traffic connects Aosta to the municipality of Sarre via a flat route that runs along the Dora Baltea for 3 kilometers.
Actually, the bike path in question is much longer: in fact, this route allows people to move by bike, or on foot, from Sarre to Fénis.
In this case it is 24 kilometers of bicycle path, through the municipalities of Gressan, Aosta, Charvensod, Pollein, Brissogne, Saint-Marcel and Nus.
