Unité des Communes Grand-Paradis Arvier
Between nature reserves and fine wines
Arvier is an Aosta Valley commune of 870 inhabitants, just 15 kilometers from Aosta and located at 780 meters above sea level at the mouth of the Valgrisenche valley.
This medieval village lies in an indentation of the Val d’Aosta, halfway between Aosta and Courmayeur, and the area is characterized mainly by the cultivation of vineyards.
That of Arvier is the only municipality in the entire Aosta Valley to have the curious distinction of including two distinct villages: the village of the commune and the village of Leverogne.
In addition, it is the village where the renowned red wine Enfer d’Arvier, a fine Aosta Valley wine with D.O.C. designation, is produced.
Arvier The History
In Roman times, the so-called Via delle Gallie, a Roman consular road ordered by Emperor Augustus to connect the Po Valley with Gaul, passed through Arvier.
At the time, this medieval village was named Arebrigium (from are = near and briga = high ground).
In 1939 the place name was Italianized to Arviè, and this commune came to include that of Avise.
Later, beginning in 1946, the original name of the town was returned to its original name, and from that year Avise became a separate commune again, near Arvier.
Whato do in Arvier
what to do in Arvier
Arvier is a municipality that includes several hamlets and places of interest in many respects.
After a walk through the old village, we recommend seeing the parish church of St. Sulpice, in Piazza Chanoux, recognizable by its soaring Romanesque bell tower.
From here you can access a flight of steps leading to the top of the promontory on which stands the Château de La Mothe, raised to a commanding position more than 800 years ago.
The territory of Arvier includes a large area of naturalistic interest in which a small lake appears, embraced by a dense reed thicket growing in the center of a prairie: this is Lake Lolair, which is part of the nature reserve of the same name.
From the village, it is possible to take several trails to reach Saint-Nicolas, passing through the Enfer trails and other smaller locations that instead climb the mountain slopes to the Envers, that is, the orographic right of the Valley.
In 2021, Arvier’s Big Bench, the third giant bench inserted into the Aosta Valley territory to enhance its valuable trail network, was installed.
This one is particularly special because it has a breathtaking view directly over Mont Blanc.
