Unité des Communes Grand-Paradis Avise
a village rich in treasures
Avise is a small Aosta Valley commune of just 300 inhabitants, located halfway between Aosta, from which it is 17 kilometers away, and Courmayeur, at the foot of the majestic Mont Blanc massif.
Away from the beaten tourist areas, the village of Avise stands at 775 meters above sea level and is interesting for the presence of the 15th-century castle of the same name located at the entrance to the village, not to be confused with the Castle of Blonay, which stands in the center instead.
Avise The History
The name of this village comes from the well-known lords of Avise, an important noble family in the Aosta Valley region.
It was the lords of Avise who ruled over the village for a long time, and it was Boniface d'Avise who commissioned the construction of the "Castle of Avise" in order to have a comfortable and prestigious residence.
The motto of these noble lords was "Qui tost Avise tart se repent," which means "He who thinks first, then does not repent."
This saying appears in the form of an engraving carved above the entrance door to the ancient manor house from the 1400s.
Whato do in Avise
What to do in Avise
Avise lends itself to a short walk amid the dwellings of the old village starting at the Avise Castle Tower, which marks the beginning of the route in the direction of the older Blonay Castle.
At the end of the village, a small square overlooks the 8th-century parish church of San Brizio, the only one in the entire Aosta Valley to have been built in honor of the bishop of Tours.
For those who love nature and hiking in the mountains, less than 1 kilometer from Avise you can reach the marvelous Frenay waterfall, which provides an extraordinary view of Mont Blanc.
In addition, you cannot miss a walk to discover the Comba di Vertosan, a valley that is part of the municipality of Avise, but which lies much higher, at 1870 meters above sea level, above the mountain village of Saint-Nicolas.
Although the small village of Avise is little visited by tourists, it is a place full of charm, history, and artistic and architectural beauty all waiting to be discovered.
