At the gates of Cogne
At the gateway to the Gran Paradiso National Park, just 8 kilometers from Aosta, Aymavilles is an Aosta Valley municipality of approximately 2090 inhabitants, expressing elegance and magnificence.
Located at 1699 meters above sea level, Aymavilles rises on the orographic right of the Dora Baltea River, nestled in a landscape dominated by countless vineyards, at the mouth of the Val di Cogne.
The favorable location of the village, which lies on an expanse of verdant fields, has allowed rapid and intense development of viticulture: the famous Torrette is the red wine of excellence produced in the Aymavilles area.
Aymavilles The History
The history of Aymavilles has very remote origins: in Roman times, the very ancient Gallic road leading to the Po Valley passed right through here.
Regarding the etymology of the name of Aymavilles, it is thought that it probably comes from the name of a settler who lived in Roman times, a certain Aimus (Patavinus).
We find this settler's name engraved on the Pont d'Aёl aqueduct-bridge, a jewel of Roman architecture.
The name on the bridge has the suffix -villes, used to distinguish the central villages of municipalities, i.e. the so-called capitals.
At the time of Fascism, the municipality of Aymavilles was merged with that of Villanova Baltea and, from 1939 to 1945, the name of the village was Italianized to Aimavilla.

What to do in Aymavilles
Aymavilles is a tranquil town that offers its visitors the opportunity to admire several historical monuments of architectural interest while at the same time launching themselves into various sports and adventures related to the navigability of the Grand Eyvia stream.
In the upper part of the village, on a moraine hill, stands mighty the famous Castle of Aymavilles, a unique manor house dating back to 1207, but remodeled several times over the centuries until it took on a completely different face, an expression of 18th-century Baroque.
On the road in the direction of Cogne you can also admire the precious Parish of Saint-Léger.
The current structure was built in the eighteenth century and the most interesting feature of this building is undoubtedly the grandiose trompe-l’œil façade entirely frescoed.
Also, just 5 kilometers from Aymavilles, going up towards the Cogne Valley, you cannot miss a spectacular work of Roman civil engineering walls: the Pont d’Aёl aqueduct-bridge.
Not far from here, we recommend going to Ozein, a wonderful village nestled in the woods with incredible views of Mont Blanc, where you can delight your palate with “favò,” the typical broad bean soup.
What’s more, Aymavilles is an excellent strategic base from which to start trekking and walking throughout the Aosta Valley.
The Grand Eyvia stream is the perfect setting for canyoning, rafting, kayaking, hydrospeed and other activities.
