the country on the edge of the Dora
Brissogne is a scattered municipality positioned in the center of the Aosta Valley.
Located 14 kilometers from Aosta, Brissogne has 943 inhabitants and is spread over an area with a considerable difference in altitude: in fact, the lowest point of the municipality is at 500 meters above sea level and the highest at 2,800 meters.
The municipality of Brissogne is located on the envers, that is, on the orographic right of the Dora Baltea and thus on the side of the Aosta Valley where the sun does not beat during the winter season.
Brissogne The History
The origin of the name
The toponym of Brissogne is supposed to derive from the Latin name Brittius and would refer to a private property belonging to the lords who resided in the castle.
Whato do in Brissogne
If you have the opportunity to travel to Brissogne, we recommend seeing the remains of the ancient medieval castle dating back to the year 1,000, of which today only the cylindrical tower and part of the masonry can be admired.
Also worth visiting are the chapel of Our Lady of the Snows in Etabloz and that of St. Roch in Neyran.
Another very interesting religious building is the parish of St. Catherine, which expresses simplicity but from whose churchyard one of the most fascinating views of the valley can be admired.
For lovers of mountains and long treks, from Brissogne it is possible to reach the Laures lakes via a tough walk set in one of the most beautiful and remote valleys in the Aosta Valley: the Laures valley.
