Fifty kilometers from Aosta, in the middle Val d’Ayas, lies Brusson, also called Breutson in Valle d’Aosta patois.
It is an Aosta Valley commune of 883 inhabitants, located at 1,338 meters above sea level, almost on the border with Piedmont.
Nestled in an extraordinary landscape characterized by a particularly sunny location and a mild climate, Brusson is, at any time of year, an ideal destination for those who love relaxation and tranquility.
Brusson The History
The History of Brusson The commune of Brusson was already fairly well known in the Middle Ages, as it was the site of an area guarded by the counts of Challant, who at the time owned their residence in Verrès, the commune from which Val d'Ayas later originated.
Brusson represented an important crossroads for communications.
In fact, from its two passes, the Col de Ranzola and the Col de Joux, there was access on one side to the Po Valley and on the other to the upper part of the Aosta Valley, as far as Switzerland.
Then, from Brusson, passing towards Monte Rosa, one crossed the trade route that enabled the merchants of the time to reach Switzerland.
Therefore, it can be understood how already in the 1300s Brusson was of great importance especially for communications and trade.
The place name Brusson is supposed to derive from the Piedmontese name brusséi, meaning bush, or from brussón, meaning blueberry.
We also know that during the era of fascism, from the year 1939 until 1946, the name was Italianized into Brussone, until Brusson regained its original toponym. Brusson and its historical riches In Brusson there is an important gold mining site that has been recently recovered and is part of the industrial heritage of the area.
This municipality is also rich in historical beauties: You certainly cannot miss the Castle of Graines, dating back to the year 1000 and which in the past was the main symbol of the Challant feudal rule over this territory.
The town of Brusson is also represented by the splendid stone and wooden buildings, such as the Villa Helvetia, perfectly integrated with the territory, and numerous religious buildings, such as the Church of St. Maurice.
