Challand-Saint-Anselme The History

The territory of Challand-Saint-Anselme has been inhabited since pre-Roman times, and more precisely at the time of the Salassi, who established a mining center here, taking advantage of the presence of gold seams in the surrounding mountains.
After the Salassi, the territory passed into the hands of the Romans, who were also interested in the gold riches of the area.
The Challand-Saint-Anselme mines were alternately exploited until 1939, when Giuseppe Rivetti of Turin abandoned them for good.
The Challant family also had a strong influence on this community, and in the past, during the Middle Ages, it represented the leading household in Valle d'Aosta.
In fact, the village drew its name from Challant territory in 1200, with the investiture of Boson II as lord of Villa Castle.
The year 1754 is remembered as the year in which it gained its independence.
The last vicissitudes saw Challand-Saint-Anselme being incorporated into Challand-Saint-Victor under the name of Villa Sant'Anselmo.
Finally, in 1946, with the fall of Fascism, the advent of the Resistance and the Liberation, the municipality again obtained its original name and, above all, its autonomy.
