Unité des Communes Mont-Cervin Chambave

where the muscatel originated

Chambave is an Aosta Valley commune of 885 inhabitants, located in the central valley of the Dora Baltea River, at an altitude of 486 m.a.s.l. and about 18 kilometers east of Aosta.
The commune of Chambave, otherwise known as Tsambava in the typical Aosta Valley dialect and renowned for its wine, covers more than 20 km² and there are numerous villages that make up this locality.
In addition, the Via Francigena, which runs almost entirely on the orographic left of the Dora Baltea, also passes through Chambave.
Among the vineyards and grasslands of the locality, this ancient route then continues to Châtillon.

Chambave The History

Chambave has ancient origins.
It was once a small village, and its urban structure testifies to the fact that even in the past it played a key role as a commercial hub.
We know that Chambave dates back to the Roman period, and it is no coincidence that this village is located right on the consular road of Gaul, wanted by the Emperor Augustus, to connect the Po Valley with Gaul.
However, there are traces of settlement in much earlier times: many objects and tools unearthed have been thoroughly analyzed and it turns out that they even belong to the Iron Age.
It was in medieval times that Chambave knew how to exploit its great commercial potential more wisely, becoming an attractive hub.
Beginning in the 14th century, however, Chambave also began to gain importance for its wine business, particularly Muscat de Chambave.
During Fascism, the municipality of Chambave also included those of Saint-Denis and Verrayes, and the toponym was Italianized to Ciambave from 1939 to 1945.

Whato do in Chambave

What to do in Chambave

Characterized by broad hills, chestnut, larch and red pine forests, and a mild, accommodating climate, Chambave is a hospitable, people-friendly town.
The backdrop to this pleasant commune is a mountain with a distinctive profile: the Mont Avic.
This mountain is located right on the border between the municipalities of Champdepraz and Chambave, in the Val d’Aosta Graian Alps.
The hills on which the villages of this Valdostan commune lie are the ideal environment to host and cultivate the famous grapes that have become the symbol of the country.
Vineyards dominate the land, giving Chambave a unique atmosphere of special charm.
The fertile character of this land is particularly suited to the production of high wines, such as the famous Muscat of Chambave.
The locality gives evocative village corners to visit and appears as a blend of culture, history, sports and tradition.
A kilometer-long bike path connects Chambave to neighboring towns and pushes into the upper and lower Dora Baltea Valley.
The track crosses the sports area set up with old-fashioned games and tools of all kinds.
Common denominator of each offering is the beautiful natural surroundings.
