Where cars can't get to
Considered the “Pearl of the Alps,” Chamois is a very picturesque resort indeed, with the Matterhorn as its backdrop and renowned because of the total absence of cars.
In fact, this village, which can be reached in about 45 minutes from Aosta, is accessible only by cable car or on foot.
Inhabited by just 100 people, the small alpine village of Chamois lies in a valley basin in Valtournenche, where silence and quiet reign supreme.
Chamois stands at 1,818 meters above sea level and boasts two notable firsts: it is the highest municipality in the entire region, and it is also the only car-free municipality.
Of paved roads, in fact, not a single one can be seen, and this makes the atmosphere in Chamois even more authentic and peaceful.
Chamois The History
Chamois has managed to maintain its oldest traditions over time.
Even today one can admire the magnificent rascards, typical alpine constructions made entirely of wood.
It can truly be said that Chamois is an extraordinary example of rural architecture perfectly integrated into its surroundings.
In order to avoid the construction of roads and consequently the annoying buzz of traffic, Chamois always chose to favor the cable car as the only means of transportation and quick and direct connection to the valley floor.
Thanks to this noble choice of its inhabitants, today Chamois still retains its authentic stone streets and in general the charm of the area has been beautifully preserved.
