Unité des Communes Mont-Cervin Châtillon
the land of castles
Châtillon is an Italian municipality of 4,454 inhabitants in Valle d’Aosta, located in the central valley of the Dora Baltea, between the Dora and the Marmore stream, at the entrance to Valtournenche.
The town, situated in a basin, is overlooked to the north by Mount Zerbion and to the south by Mount Barbeston and Cima Nera.
Châtillon The History
Châtillon has ancient origins, as evidenced by the findings of pottery fragments at the railway station and the Roman bridge over the Marmore stream.
The Latin place name is Castellum, indicating the presence of a fortification.
In the Middle Ages, the commune was dominated by the Challant family, which built the castle of Ussel there, which can still be visited today.
Châtillon was also an important stop on the Via Francigena, the road traveled by pilgrims to Rome.
Whato do in Châtillon
What to do in Chatillon
Visiting Chatillon always reserves many surprises.
In addition to the enchanting medieval history still visible and tangible, Chatillon is surrounded by spectacular natural beauty, with many opportunities for hiking and trekking.
Among the many, we recommend the Roman Trail, an 8-kilometer historic trail that follows an ancient Roman route.
Although not located directly in Chatillon, The Monte Avic Regional Nature Park is easily accessible by car.
It is a must-see especially for lovers of alpine flora and fauna.
If you want to go hiking but don’t want to miss out on a historical and cultural immersion, we recommend a walk in the charming hamlet of Promiod.
