Gressoney-La-Trinité The History
This locality, during the Middle Ages, was the property of the bishops of Sion and was inhabited by Walser shepherds, a population of Germanic origin who settled in these lands more than eight centuries ago across the Teodulo Pass.
Even today, Walser culture is reflected in customs, traditional architecture with characteristic stadel, the spoken language, Titsch, and the precious women's costume, famous for its beauty and elegance, worn by the women of Gressoney on important occasions.
About the toponym of this locality, the origins of the name are very interesting.
In fact, different meanings have been associated with the place name over time such as " plain of watercresses" Chreschen-eye, "great glacier" Grossen-eys, or Chreschen-ey " egg deposited among the watercresses."
The most reliable meaning is the former, although no documents attest to it.
The territory of Gressoney is divided into three parts, and Gressoney la trinité includes the Oberteil, meaning "the upper part"
