Gressoney-Saint-Jean The History

The history of this municipality is closely linked to the Walser community, a population of Germanic origin that arrived in this area more than eight centuries ago across the Teodulo Pass.   Even today, the traditional heritage of the Walser people is kept alive by the Walser Cultural Center and the folk group, with obvious reflections in the original architecture of the typical stadel, the spoken language (Titsch) and the precious women's costume, also worn by Queen Margaret of Savoy during her summer vacations in Gressoney in the fairy-tale Castle.
The queen, a great lover of the mountains, contributed significantly to the development of these places, which became a popular tourist destination.
About the toponym of this locality, the origins of the name are very interesting.
In fact, different meanings have been associated with the place name over time such as " plain of watercresses" Chreschen-eye, "great glacier" Grossen-eys, or Chreschen-ey " egg deposited among the watercresses."
The most reliable meaning is the former, although no documents attest to it.   The territory of Gressoney is divided into three parts, and Gressoney saint Jean includes Onderteil meaning "the lower part," and Méttelteil meaning "the middle part."
