Unité des Communes Mont-Émilius Jovençan

the small town nestled among vineyards and orchards

Jovençan is a small commune of about 500 inhabitants located 7 km from Aosta, at an altitude of 632 meters.
It is nestled amidst the beauty of the Alps, among vineyards and orchards and with a population that is committed to preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the region.
It is a municipality with a strong agricultural vocation of which viticulture holds great prominence.
However, in addition to the production of wine, apples and pears, the raising of cattle and sheep is equally common.
In fact, in Jovencan as there are many cows the tradition of Bataille de reines is kept alive.
Another widely practiced and followed activity is rebatta, a typical popular Valdostan sport.
It is a country rich in history, culture and traditions, offering visitors the opportunity to discover its historical and artistic heritage, its natural landscape and its typical products.
Let’s discover it!

Jovençan The History

The origins of Jovencan date back to Roman times, when the Aosta Valley was part of the Roman Empire.
Archaeological remains testify to the presence of Roman settlements in the area, such as the old Roman bridge.
However, the documented history of the municipality begins later, in the Middle Ages.
During the medieval period, the Aosta Valley was a border region between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire.
This strategic position often led to conflicts and changes of sovereignty.
Jovencan and the surrounding towns were subject to various local lords and noble lineages during this period.
As we have already seen in the 15th century, the Aosta Valley, including Jovencan, became part of the Duchy of Savoy.
Later, the region became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia under the Savoy dynasty.
This connection with the House of Savoy lasted for many centuries, until the Aosta Valley became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy in the 19th century.

Whato do in Jovençan

Like all the resorts in Valle d’Aosta, the area around Jovencan is surrounded by the Graian Alps, which, in fact, dominate the region.
This landscape offers numerous opportunities for lovers of nature and outdoor sports, such as hiking, skiing and mountaineering.
An excellent walk that allows you to discover Jovencan in its interest is the one along the ru d’Arbérioz.
The Ru is an ancient irrigation canal that crosses the territory of three municipalities and can be walked or biked, admiring the remains of castles, churches, and chapels.
For a more local and cultural-historical visit, we recommend entering the Maison des anciens remèdes, which, through an interactive and engaging tour suitable for even the youngest children, reintroduces the secrets handed down for centuries in the region regarding the use of local plants.
Jovencan is also home to its namesake castle, which, although now reduced to ruins, is interesting to visit knowing that its 13th-century remains are the result of the fury of the Count of Savoy in punishing the Lords of Jovençan.
There is also no shortage of unique corners such as the Roman bridge, the lion fountain, and the war memorial.
As already anticipated Jovencan is the wine country.
We invite you to taste quality wines such as Torrette and Petit Rouge after walking around the magnificent vineyards!
