Morgex The History
Morgex has ancient roots, with evidence of human settlement dating back to Roman times.
The name "Morgex" seems to derive from the Latin word "Murius," which indicated a stronghold or wall.
During the Middle Ages, Morgex became part of the territories controlled by the feudal lords of the Aosta Valley.
It was involved in territorial conflicts and disputes between various noble families, including the Savoy family, who, in the 15th century united Morgex to their territories marking the beginning of a long Savoy domination of the Aosta Valley.
During the Napoleonic wars, the Aosta Valley, including Morgex, was occupied by French troops.
Subsequently, it became part of the Mont Blanc department.
After the fall of Napoleon, the Aosta Valley was returned to the Kingdom of Sardinia and was later included in the Kingdom of Italy during the Italian unification process in the 19th century.
Morgex is strategically located for tourism, being situated in close proximity to the mountains of the Alps and Mont Blanc.
Summer and winter tourism is an important driver of the local economy, with activities such as hiking, skiing, and visiting the Pré-Saint-Didier spa.
