Nus The History

This charming Valdostan village has an important history behind it dating back to 3000 B.C., when the first human settlements are identified.
Like a good part of the Valle d'Aosta, Nus was also occupied by the Romans, in fact there are several testimonies dating back to Roman times such as coins, bricks and other objects at the Castle of Pilate (according to a legend so called, because the Roman Procurator Pontius Pilate stayed in this Castle while on his way to Vienne ,in Gaul ,where he had been exiled by Caligula ) .
The arrival of the Romans in the Aosta Valley brought a great cultural and structural change, an example of which is a great Consular Way ,the Road of Gaul.
This was created along the central axis and on its route were created refreshment points for travelers or stations for changing horses, later giving rise to new towns.
The medieval period was characterized by the rule of the Family of the Lords of Nus ,who exercised their authority over the territory from the 11th to the 16th century.
To them belonged the Castle of Pilate and the Fortress ( Upper Castle )whose present vestiges are located on two overhanging knolls at the entrance to the Vallon de Saint-Barthélemy .
The place name comes from the Latin '' nonus,'' referring to the nine miles distance from Aosta, corresponding to 12 kilometers today.
