Quart The History
We trace the history of Quart back to Roman times during which the Via delle Gallie, a Roman consular road built by Augustus to connect the Po Valley with Gaul, passed through here.
Even in Roman times Quart was only a short distance from Augusta Praetoria and was well connected to it.
In fact, the name Quart, of Roman origin, derives from the milestone quartus, as Quart is located Ad quartum ab Augusta lapidem, or four Roman miles from Augusta Praetoria (today's Aosta).
In medieval times Quart was part of the possessions of Seigneurs de la Porte Saint-Ours, who resided within the Porta Prætoria of Aosta until the 12th century, and held control of goods and fairs in the Bourg of Saint-Ours, the hamlet of the Collegiate Church of Saint Bear in Aosta.
It was in 1185, when Jacques de la Porte Saint-Ours moved his seat to Quart, that the construction of the castle on the hill of Quart was begun, which later passed into the hands of the Savoy family after the extinction of the House of Lords of Quart.
In Fascist times, the municipality included the towns of Brissogne and Saint-Marcel, and the toponym was Italianized into Quart Pretoria, from 1929 to 1946 then reciprocated into Quart after liberation.
