Unité des Communes Grand-Paradis Rhemes-Notre-dame
the valley of the ibexes
Rhemes Notre Dame, a scattered and unspoiled commune due to its remote geographical location, has only 76 inhabitants.
Situated at 1,725 m above sea level and 32 km from Aosta, Rheme Notre Dame is located in the Rhemes Valley, the southernmost point of this fascinating region.
Rhemes-Notre-dame The History
For a long time, reaching Rhemes was a risky venture because of the avalanches that isolated the area.
It was not until the 1960s that a road was built that was practicable even in winter, making Rhemes Notre Dame an easier destination to reach.
This facilitated the increase in tourists who, in recent years, are increasingly attracted to the remote Rhemes Valley, which preserves its natural and architectural beauty intact.
Whato do in Rhemes-Notre-dame
Although a small municipality, Rhemes offers numerous activities.
Certainly, nature and sports lovers will not be disappointed and will find plenty to enjoy here.
The activities Rhemes Valley offers range from Nordic skiing and mountaineering in winter to rock climbing and incredible hiking trails in summer.
Among these we recommend several types.
The nature trail and the walk to Lake Pellaud are accessible to everyone given their smooth, flat morphology that is easy to navigate even with a stroller.
If you prefer loop trails immersed in the greenery and tranquility of the mountains, the Gran Ru loop is for you.
For the more experienced we cannot but recommend the Benevolo, an incredible refuge in the Gran Paradiso National Park located at 2287 m.
Like all Valdostan municipalities, the heart of Rhemes beats in local traditions, with community ovens and mills preserving the village’s historical and cultural heritage.
In this regard, the Bruil Parish Church is another must-see if you are in the area.
