Rhêmes-Saint-Georges The History

First of all, where did this long name come from?
This story is very interesting.
In the past, the area of the present commune of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges was called "voix," which means "voice" in French, because of the echo that formed from the valley walls at this point.
Voix was the opposite side of Cyvoix (French for "on this side of the voice "), which indicated the present commune of Saint-Nicolas.
Later, the Greek word Rhêma was used to refer to the same concept, which has precisely the same meaning.
Finally, starting around 1400, the commune took the name of the patron saint Saint George, as also happened to Saint-Nicolas.   From some artifacts discovered in 1972, it is known that Rhemes Saint Georges was inhabited during the Bronze Age.
In addition to having been a place of very ancient civilizations, Rhemes is home to the church dedicated to Saint Georges, which seems to date from the 9th century, and therefore the oldest in the Aosta Valley.
In the Middle Ages it belonged together with Rhemes-Notre-Dame to the jurisdiction of Chatel-Argent, that is, to the lords of Bard.
From the end of the 14th century the territory passed from hand to hand to the Sarriod, Roncas, Dépléoz and Brunel families, and then became part of the Savoy duchy in 1740.   Under the Fascist government in 1928 Rhêmes-Notre-Dame and Rhêmes-Saint-Georges were united into a single municipal entity called in Italian Val di Rema.
Only after the Liberation, in 1946, did the two municipalities reconstitute themselves and resume their previous names.
