Sarre The History

From some traces of human settlements found near Ville sur Sarre, it was discovered that the territory of Sarre was probably inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Ages, probably due to the excellent exposure to the sun allowing the cultivation of vines and orchards.
In Roman times, the Via delle Gallie, a Roman consular road commissioned by Augustus to connect the Po Valley with Gaul, passed through Sarre, as it did through many other towns in Valle d'Aosta.
In the Middle Ages, the territory of Sarre was placed under the jurisdiction of the lords of Bard between Jacques de Bard, founder of the Sarre lineage, who around 1242 initiated the construction of the imposing royal castle that became, in 1869, the hunting residence of King Victor Emmanuel II, nicknamed "Le Roi chasseur" (in French, The Hunting King), because of the important hunting trips in the valleys of Cogne, Valsavarenche and Rhêmes.
