Villeneuve The History

Given its strategic geographic location, Villeneuve was frequented since protohistoric times, as it was located on high ground sheltered from danger and the overflow of water from the valley floor, and was also known later to Salassians and Romans.
Testifying to these periods of settlement are the findings of a Roman funerary epigraph, a milestone discovered in the Church of Santa Maria, and the remains of a Roman bridge for crossing the Dora Baltea River.
In addition, some coins dating back to the 5th century were found under the village's parish church, testifying to the great commercial passage and the role of service center that the village represented in medieval times, because it was positioned right at the mouth of the valleys leading to Rhemes and Valsavarenche, as well as the Via Francigena.
During Fascism, from 1926 to 1946, it was called Villanova Baltea due to the free initiative of its podestà Francesco Ottoz, former president of the Merchants' League and then of the Fascist Federation of Merchants, who also had its territory effectively enlarged to include that of the ancient Châtel-Argent district.
The commune of Villanova Baltea also included the territory of the present commune of Saint-Pierre.

It was conceived to make the most of the Barmè, cellars carved into the rock of the “Becca” , inside which are hosted wine producers who offer tastings of their products 100% made in valle d’aosta.
