Sarre Royal Castle of Sarre

For a journey through time within the walls of the Savoy.

The town’s most impressive monument is undoubtedly The Castle of Sarre, located in Lalex, easily accessible from Aosta and the Gran Paradiso valleys.
The castle has ancient origins, dating back to the 13th century, when it was a strong house or tower guarding the territory.
Over the centuries, it has changed hands several times.
The first were the lords of Bard.
Hugh, the progenitor of the dynasty, owned the castles and territories of Bard, Avise, Pont-Saint-Martin, Champorcher, Sarre, and Introd in the 11th century.
In the 19th century it passed into the hands of the Savoy family, becoming in 1869 the hunting and holiday home of Victor Emmanuel II and Humbert I in particular. The two rois chasseurs loved to spend their vacations at the castle, from where they left for their hunting expeditions in the surrounding valleys, now part of the Gran Paradiso National Park.
As you visit the castle, you can admire the various rooms decorated with period furniture and objects, including the Gallery and the Salon decorated with the horns of ibexes and chamois.
You can also discover the history and curiosities of the Savoy family and its relationship with the Aosta Valley through the photographic and documentary evidence displayed in the museum.
The castle is surrounded by a beautiful park where you can stroll and enjoy the view of the mountains.
